My artist's statement is this poem:
Creator
I sit sometimes
surrounded
by things I have made
myself.
From them I draw
strength.
I sometimes sit and read
poems
I have written.
Often I learn about myself
this way.
Knowing these things
because I created them,
yet surprised
when I visit them,
I imagine to myself
that God might feel the same way
about us.
I paint in different ways at different times, but recently I have been painting by standing before my easel and making marks and seeing what happens. It sounds so very off-hand, but it has taken me 60 years to find the courage to paint in this way. The images mean more to me, and I feel more exposed when they are displayed.
After a time of living in this other inner world, I fall back into my physical world, and then I see what I have done.
I look for a point of stillness to come out of the image. The image itself may very well have movement, but the stillness comes from within the viewer if it is successful.
And like in the poem I am always surprised.
When I create an art piece, there is much that ends up unmanifested along with what is actually expressed. Is it not natural to imagine that we are also creations with unmanifested depths below what we currently express?
And that our Creator might be surprised by what He Himself created?
